The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, writes that the Trump administration is promoting former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán for the position of UN secretary-general, counting on the support of Russia and China.

Details: The WSJ notes that the US not only supported the former prime minister of Hungary in his decision to participate in the race but was the one who suggested the idea to him.
One State Department official under the Trump administration admits that at first glance this sounds crazy. However, judging by previous talks with Washington, Russia and China are believed to support the idea, and the plan is for Orbán to become their joint candidate.
Officials from the US and another country emphasised that when the US, Russia and China pursue the same goal in the UN Security Council, they generally achieve it.
A State Department representative counted eight votes in the Security Council that would vote "comfortably" for Orbán and another 10 votes out of the 15 Council members that could be secured.
One American official stated that Orbán is "the dream MAGA-conservative candidate" .
The WSJ writes that in many respects, this is down to his actions against mass migration, liberal NGOs and left-leaning courts and the press.
Furthermore, the WSJ notes that Orbán frequently clashed with the European Union while benefiting from it in the form of subsidies and his pro-China orientation never undermined his image as a defender of Western civilisation.
If Orbán puts forward his candidacy for the UN post, US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to support him once again, although, according to a source familiar with the process, the announcement is being held back until after the US midterm elections.
American officials primarily contacted Orbán to gauge his interest in the UN position. They found that he was positively inclined, albeit with caveats.
The remaining candidates for the position of secretary-general, according to a representative of the second country, are heavy on "secretary" – with experience in international bureaucracy or behind-the-scenes diplomacy. Orbán, on the other hand, would be a "general" .
A State Department representative agreed with this, adding that Orbán adheres to the correct ideology, knows how to exercise power under hostile conditions and will not be intimidated by the establishment.
Background: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently stressed the need to reform the UN and strengthen accountability mechanisms to stop governments and forces that destroy international rules, unleash wars of aggression and multiply suffering in the world. Calls to abolish the veto power in the UN Security Council have been made for a long time, especially in connection with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In particular, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also called for removing the veto power in the UN Security Council. In spring, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul criticised the UN Security Council for its inability to make decisions due to the vetoes of individual members.
