US President Donald Trump has floated the idea of imposing 200% tariffs on Ukraine and Russia, saying that this approach had helped "end" five wars.

Quote: "We ended five wars thanks to tariffs. I said, 'If you continue to fight, we're going to put a 200% tariff on you', and they stopped.
We should probably immediately do it with Ukraine and Russia. Never thought of it."
Details: However, Trump contradicted himself, noting that "we don't buy enough" for such an approach to work.
Background: Trump signed an executive order waiving certain sanctions, restrictions and tariffs against Russia provided for under the Graham Act. The New York Times reported that Trump's administration had proposed that Europe " resume buying more Russian gas ". Trump said in spring 2025 that he would impose 200% tariffs on all wines and other alcoholic products from EU countries unless the EU scrapped its tariff on whisky.
