Details: The European officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said Rubio had also told his Western counterparts in private that he is doubtful a peace agreement could be reached in the coming months. His comments came during the G 20 foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta, which lasted two days and ended on 31 October.
Radio Liberty's sources added that Rubio's private assessment also touched upon Ukraine's potential NATO accession, which he reportedly described as unrealistic in the short term and unacceptable to Putin.
Rubio also warned that Russia's capture of the entire Donbas would not satisfy the Kremlin's territorial ambitions.
Background: Rubio suggested that Washington may invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the G 20 leaders' summit in December, particularly if his attendance could produce positive results. Rubio also defended Washington's invitation for Russia to participate in G 20 meetings, emphasising the need to continue interaction with the Russian side.
