Hackers have gained access to The Kyiv Independent's mailing list and sent messages resembling those that previously appeared following the hacking of the state air-raid warning app.
Source: Olha Rudenko , Editor-in-Chief of The Kyiv Independent
Quote: "Since last night, The Kyiv Independent has been under a hacker attack, most likely Russian."
Details: According to Rudenko, the hackers gained access to the site's CMS and one of the mailing services. They used this to send out a newsletter to addresses from their subscriber base and publish similar posts on the site.
Quote: "The messages were in Russian and their content resembled the message that hackers placed in the state air-raid warning app when it was hacked three days ago. We cannot confirm that the source of the attack is the same, but there are common signs."
Details: These were messages such as "Zelenskyy was shot at the border with Russia", etc.
The posts on the site were immediately deleted, an explanatory email was sent to subscribers, and the vulnerability was found and closed overnight.
Quote: "But this afternoon a second wave began. This time the hackers sent emails in Russian and English. Our team is currently fully engaged in dealing with this as quickly as possible and closing all possible vulnerabilities."
Details: She assured that financial information (the bank details of people who support the publication, etc.) is safe.
Quote: "So far, there is no reason to believe that the hackers gained access to anything other than the CMS and the mailing service, but we continue to check this."
Details: Rudenko said that this is the first such breach in the nearly five years of The Kyiv Independent's operation.
Background: On the evening of 1 November, Ukraine's official Air Alarm application was apparently hacked , displaying alerts in Russian about radiation and chemical hazards. On the night of 1-2 November, unknown individuals hacked the mobile app of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations , which, among other things, notifies the public about air-raid warnings, and sent out warnings about a nuclear threat.
