European Parliament Vice-President agrees to stop hunger strike over Oleshky

European Parliament Vice-President Pina Picierno has agreed to end her hunger strike after agreements were reached on humanitarian aid and the evacuation of residents from the occupied town of Oleshky in Kherson Oblast.

Details: Lubinets said he had spoken with Picierno on 23 October and urged her to end her hunger strike, which was already posing a serious threat to her life and health.

He briefed her on the local ceasefire agreements brokered with the help of US First Lady Melania Trump.

The agreements provide for mine clearance on the road to Oleshky, the delivery of food, water, medicine and hospital equipment, and the safe passage and evacuation of civilians.

The human rights commissioner promised to keep Picierno regularly informed about the implementation of the agreements.

Background: On 21 October, Picierno went on a hunger strike to draw the international community's attention to the humanitarian catastrophe in occupied Oleshky and to secure aid for local residents. The Ukrainian and Russian general staffs announced on Friday evening that a ceasefire will be implemented in a designated area starting on the night of 26-27 October to conduct a humanitarian operation in temporarily occupied Oleshky.
